The best review we have ever received was for a job we never did.
A homeowner called about a plumbing problem and Evan took the call. He listened, asked a few questions, and then said the sentence plumbing companies are not famous for saying: I don't think you need us. Based on what he was hearing, the problem sounded like it was on the city's side of the line... which means the city fixes it, and the city does not send you a bill. He told the homeowner who to call instead. The city came out, the city fixed it, and the total invoice from EVCO came to zero dollars.
Then the homeowner left us a five-star review. His words: Evan "offered a suggestion that saved me hundreds of dollars," and it "ended up being a city thing."
Three questions that saved him hundreds
The call could have gone the other way. A less careful company books the visit first and asks questions in your driveway. But a short conversation can sort a surprising number of problems, and these three questions do most of the work...
Is it just your house, or are the neighbours seeing it too? One house is a plumbing problem. A whole street is a city problem.
Is it one fixture, or everything? A single slow drain is that drain. Every drain in the house slowing down at once points down the line, sometimes past your property line.
Did it start right after work on your street? Construction, flushing, and water main work stir up all kinds of strangeness that settles on its own... or belongs to the city.
Evan's answers pointed one way, so he said so. Twenty minutes on the phone, zero dollars, one very confused homeowner wondering why the plumbing company refused his money.
The greatest hits of free
Here is the part most people do not realize: a version of that call happens all the time. Some of the recurring ones...
The sewer smell that turns out to be a dried-out floor drain. Pour a litre of water down it, smell gone, no charge.
The water heater that "died" and just needs its pilot relit, or a breaker flipped back on.
The leak under the sink that is actually condensation sweating off a cold water line in August.
The garbage disposal that hums and does nothing, fixed by the little reset button on the bottom that nobody knows exists.
The toilet that runs every twenty minutes because the flapper chain is tangled on the flush arm. Thirty seconds to untangle, silence restored.
The drain that barely drains because the cleanout cap was never tightened properly after the last service.
None of those need a truck in your driveway. They need two minutes of questions and someone willing to give you the free answer.
Why a business would do this
People ask why we would talk ourselves out of work. Honestly... because plumbing is a reputation business, and Edmonton is smaller than it looks. The homeowner we did not charge told his neighbours. Then he wrote that review, which more people will read than any ad we could buy. And someday, when he has a problem that genuinely does need a plumber, there is no question who he is calling.
It works the other way, too. The companies that invent work get found out eventually, usually in a review of their own.
And when the job really is a job, it tends to look like this...
...underground, expensive, and impossible to fake your way through. Those are the calls where you want a company whose small answers you already trust.
So here is the promise, in writing: if you call us and the fix is something you can do yourself in five minutes, we will walk you through it. If it is the city's problem, we will tell you it is the city's problem. And if you actually do need a plumber, you will know the bill is for real work, because we had the chance to invent some and didn't.
