It's that time of year again. The flyers are out, the wish lists are circulating, and somewhere in your house there's a sump pump quietly hoping someone remembers it exists.
Forget the gift guide. Your house has a list too, and honestly, it's better than yours.
1. A battery backup for the sump pump
This is the big one. Top of the list. The thing your house would ask for if houses could talk... which, given some of the noises Edmonton's older homes make in January, they nearly can.
Here's the scenario: spring melt, heavy rain, the power flickers out for three hours. Your sump pump sits there, fully capable and completely useless without electricity. The pit fills. The basement does not forgive.
A battery backup kicks in when the power drops and keeps the pump running until the lights come back on. It's a few hundred dollars standing between you and a very bad weekend. Every plumber in this city has a story about the house that didn't have one. Ask us sometime. Actually, don't. We'll get emotional.
2. Water alarms (the $15 kind)
Little puck-shaped alarms you drop under the water heater, behind the washing machine, under the kitchen sink. When water touches them, they scream. Not a polite notification. A scream.
They cost less than the wrapping paper on a mediocre sweater, and they've saved more basements than any of us can count. Put one anywhere water lives but shouldn't travel.
3. A furnace filter multipack
Nobody dreams of furnace filters. That's exactly why your furnace wants them. A clogged filter makes the whole system work harder, run longer, and die younger. A 6-pack bought in November is the most boring and most loving thing you can do for the hardest-working appliance in an Edmonton home.
4. A tag for the main water shut-off
Quick quiz: where's your main water shut-off? If you hesitated, your house just added this to its list.
A three-dollar tag from the hardware store, hung on the valve, means that when a pipe bursts at 11pm, whoever's home doesn't have to play detective while water redecorates the basement. Bonus points if you show the whole household where it is over Christmas dinner. Nothing says holiday spirit like emergency preparedness.
5. Braided steel washing machine hoses
The rubber hoses that came with your washer have a lifespan, and when they go, they go spectacularly. Braided steel replacements cost about thirty bucks and take twenty minutes to swap. The stocking stuffer your laundry room deserves.
6. A real plunger
Not the flimsy red cup that came with the house. A proper flange plunger, the kind with the fold-out rubber lip that actually seals a toilet bowl. Keep the old one if you're sentimental. The toilet isn't.
The fine print
Most of this list costs less than a single nice dinner out, and every item on it is something your future self will thank you for at 2am some February night.
And if your house is asking for something bigger this Christmas... a water heater making decisions on its own, drains with opinions, a sump setup that needs a professional eye... that's what we're here for. EVCO Plumbing, 780-717-3743. We'll even let you wrap the invoice.
